What happens during a Reiki treatment?

A full Reiki treatment usually lasts about an hour. The recipient lies down, fully clothed. The practitioner then channels the Reiki energy through to the recipient's body by placing their hands in different, specific positions on the body. You may feel heat where the practitioner places their hands; this is a sign that there is an energy blockage in that part of the body, and so the practitioner remains there until the heat (energy) dissipates.

Reiki is so relaxing that is is quite common for people to drift off during a treatment; lulled by gentle music and the transfer of energy. I tell my clients this is their time and although we will communicate on a subconsious level there is nothing to stop the patient from talking to me during the treatment if they prefer to stay awake.

Reiki practitioners channel energy in a particular pattern to heal and harmonise.

Unlike other healing therapies based on the premise of a human energy field, Reiki seeks to restore order to the body whose vital energy has become unbalanced. The recipients body will automatically channel the Reiki energy to the part of the body that needs it most. It is not uncommon to remain in one specific position for the entirety of the treatment; ultimately, the practitioner will know when it is time to move to another position as the energy release reduces in that position.

Reiki energy has several basic effects: it brings about deep relaxation, destroys energy blockages, detoxifies the system, provides new vitality in the form of healing universal life energy, and increases the vibrational frequency of the body.
